Build Day BONUS: The bumps in the road

Image
Here she is. Out of her cage. One step closer to life with Lucy and Jim. A thing of beauty, right?  Seriously, though, let's get real.  It ain't been all rainbows and unicorns. Naturally, I've shared myriad pictures and reports of progress, so it only seems fair to reveal some of the challenges and frustrations we've experienced along the way. I'm not talking about emotional difficulties; there have been, and continue to be, plenty of those, as you might have read in one or another in  Big Girl. Tiny House. Musings blog   (shameless promotion) . I'm talking about the building curveballs tossed at us along the way.  Allow me to say that these are, of course, first world problems. Nonetheless, they have been the things that got us pissed, annoyed, frustrated, and disillusioned. We've always recovered, but we've had clenched jaws more than once because of them. Here goes... Getting the land ready : Preparing the property for the house has been a major

Build Day #33: This and that

Image
9/26/17 Coming down the homestretch... Bill got the cabinet handles on and most of the base-molding.  The sink is hooked up. the screens are in, tho we are 2 short... Milgard is just killing me. 2 of the 4’ x 3’ windows. Alicia has already contacted them. The fabric is at the upholsterer. I will take the foam down tomorrow morning. I think she is going to make it tomorrow.   The shower is all trimmed out. got the handle on it and the shower head. nice.  We got the end panel on the end of that cabinet, so all white now. will do final paint on it tomorrow. Will finish the base-molding tomorrow and what ever other riff raff we can find.  Will most likely move the hale out of the work area to the upper level. we are showing it off to people this weekend.  THEN it come to you on the 3rd. Lucky you! JC is getting back on the 2nd, so he will help deliver a hale he never helped with. how’s that...   Okay. think we are all in good shape.   How is the driveway doing? will

Build Day #32: Close, but no cigar!

Image
9-25-17 Wow! Got the flooring done. just needs base molding. got the faucet hooked up. the drawers fronts are on. the handles are in place.  The end panel got cut and painted one coat. The cushion and the pillows are great colors and they match perfectly.  There is just one oops that I had. a little short on the calculations.  When I sent the measurements to the Upholstery people, I was off by 8”. so we are short. Cute gap.  But how to make it work for us. I had a couple of ideas... One: we could make a bolster that rests there when you are not using it. like 12” tall and 8” wide to use it for an arm rest. either square edge or an angled one. like for a head rest. Two: make a small box for your blankets and stuff to fold nicely into. Three: put a round bolster in there for under your knees when you are finally prone and resting. Four: I think there is enuf material to redo that cushion.  Entirely up to you.  [We chose 4. A complete redo. I just know tha

Build Day #31: And we have mango!

Image
9/22/17 Friday Pics!! Here is the mango desk... before I oiled it... then after. it is stunning.. see the floor sample on the floor? Here are the pieces of molding across the back and side installed.  What an awesome space!  I am thinking no need to have the top varathaned. it has the Danish Watco Oil on it now. if you want it varathaned, I certainly can. on monday. needs to set over night.  the doors are done.. the drawers needed the backs painted yet.. ah well  Here is your cozy loft. he put down a drop clothe to protect the flooring. the shelves are rather spectacular. Here is the finished handrail. yet another great idea. Ta dum! what about this!. countertop in. faucet placed. not hooked up. doors and sink plate in place. even got the small 4” piece of granite installed. so so sweet. Bill actually put the flooring down in the bench area. but I forgot to take pics as it was covered with cardboard. shoots. Barrie picked up the cushions today. and pillows, so tha

Build Day #30: Oooh la la!

Image
9/21/17 Almost Friday pics What a day!  picked up the mango shelves from Tom. what beauties they are. Bill got the hardware on the wall. I built the jig for drilling them straight. what a team. They are not set all the way to the wall. I need to seal them, then they can be pushed all the way in. The counter guy did his magic. fits perfectly!!  Good it can dry overnight, then ready for work tomorrow. Cyndy did her magic on the doors and the drawer fronts. both sides are done and ready for install. Tomorrow Bill can load the doors and drawers into their respective places. and do the mango top, which is stunning. Barrie is picking up the cushions and the pillows tomorrow, so it will be all dressed up for the weekend. nice. Will set the faucet anyway in the puka. may not hook it up, but it will look nice for the pics. Alrighty then. life is moving forward. Thanks. Hope all are well.  ☀☀☀ To read about our entire tiny house adventure, including musings, building re

Build Day #29: Railing and floating shelves

Image
9/20/17 Shelves R Us Here is the bed marked off at 14” tall at 5’ wide. the line on the wall is center of the space - 15”. The shelf is 6” deep, just like the tape on the wall. and 1 1/4” in depth.  There is a shelf for both sides out of the down fall of the mango slab.  So, if this is okay, I would like to install the floating shelf hardware tomorrow.  The shelves over the sink area are door trim to window trim and window trim to wall.  The tape is 20” off of the countertop. these shelves are 8” deep and 1 1/4” in depth, with lightly rounded edges.  The shelf over the stove cannot really be much lower and thought you would want both sides of the window to match.  Let me know by tomorrow morning and I will have Bill install them. Got the handrail installed today. we have a little tweaking to do on it and then that is done. turned out really nice.  Looks like it just grew up out of thin air and has always been there. good call on the stainless steel idea.   The cushions wer

Build Day #28: Gimme more mango!

Image
9/18/17 Doors are us! Got the primer coat and first coat one side today. they are stunning. the grains all line up on the solid part.  The drawers are supposed to be down by tomorrow. Additional mango for shelving <-- This is one option. Mango but no live edge to speak of. --> Here is m y favorite. Matching mango and great live edge. [We gave her the thumbs up on this one.]   I am stoked. Got 9 pair of the magic [floating shelf] hardware so it can handle the weight. I will give Tom the new mango pieces, and he will focus on the shelves tomorrow. the mango desktop is just about done. Here is the work cat and the awning with the new lights. I played with the handrail today. finished drilling the holes and was so much better with the cobalt bit. even polished some of it up. Alrighty then. ☀☀☀ To read about our entire tiny house adventure, including musings, building reports, and photo gallery, visit  http://lucylincolnfrost.com/.

Build Day #27: You have to believe!

Image
Johanna says that a delivery date is "magic." Of course, I want to plan, but all of the final pieces come together however they come together, and we get delivery when she feels it's time. So, we receive her reports - which are no longer daily - and happily know we are getting oh-so-close. Right now we are shooting for the first week of October. And the "Build Day" number of my posts no longer reflects the actual, since they do what they can when the can, all the while ramping up on their next house. The concrete forms for the driveway are in, and weather permitting, the pour will take place on Monday. Then two weeks to cure. Even more than the house, we need the cows back on the property. The grass is out of control! 9/14/17 Your flooring... That is the bench to the left of it. it is really gorgeous! Good call.  Going to wait on floor install until we are done with everything.. would like to keep floor pristine. I got the Rockler magic floating s

Build Day #26: Cutie patootie!

Image
9/8/17 Cute loft... Got the loft painted and the base molding installed. so you can have a good idea of what it is going to look like. Good your lites are so high up. that window is 24”. your mattress ensemble is half way up the window. The USB outlets that Jim got need to go in single boxes. they don’t play well with other devices . I am unable to find a plate that works for that USB and a regular Lutron. hmm. If you can find this plate, right on. if not, then we need to buy two from Home Depot or Lowes that work with the Lutron double plates. We got the awning up and the second exterior light. we did remake the awning so it would be little bigger because the one part would not fit with the new light on left. it looks great! I heard the bridge by you is closing, but only in the am. I can work with that. We still are waiting for flooring parts to arrive, and the upholstery to be sewn and the granite to be fabricated. We are actually right on schedule. Bill is going

Build Day #25: Yeah, but when will it be delivered??

Image
Today's report is a collection of emails we've had with Johanna. Things are getting frustrating as we narrow in on some key decisions to be made...like when the house will be delivered. It starts out happy enough, but there is definitely some stuff we have to work out. And I'm going to spare you the three billion messages about the freaking stove. 9/7/17 Having some fun now... [Really? Are we??] Okay. played with grab bars today. got the ones up on the trim. and backed it with steel behind the trim. looks nice. I have the other 2 placed where they might go. For sure the one on the step. not so sure about one on refer cabinet. I went up and down those stairs today .. without the handle. what I discovered is that I held onto the edge of the cabinet rather than the handle because it is not installed. and it worked just fine.  The one on the step. I really missed and wished it was working. so. up to you.  Got the inside of the benches all painted. redid the to

Build Day #24: Trim, paint, awning, and steps

Image
9/6/17 Yeah for details... I got the trim up around the garden windows. both ends. and the trim around the front door. Cyndy been painting all the white paint. nearly done. tmw will get last side. all caulked and ready. Got the last window in and trimmed today. nice. I got all the last piece of trim on today. working on the grab handles on the window trim. backing it with a long skinny piece of metal behind the trim. Szilard got the last of the mahogany base molding varathaned today. ready once the flooring arrives... WHICH, BTW. is being shipped here tomorrow via UPS! yahoo! Got the [temporary until we build a lanai] steps made. waiting for a couple of coats of paint. here is the awning. I am working on wiring both of the exterior lights . now, the awning is a couple of inches closer on one side than the other.  IF I match the distance from the door trim then it will be closer to the brace for the awning.  if I center it in the puka, then it will be closer to the t
